Helping Hands
Helping Hands is a group formed of Women of the ELCA (that is, women of the church). All women are invited to join our meetings which are held at 7:00 PM, the second Wednesday of each month in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
As part of our desire to build a stronger relationship among the women at Our Redeemer, we are organizing a trip to the upcoming Women of Faith event, which will be held August 17 – 18, 2012, at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. Yes, August seems to be a long way off, but it will be here before we know it. The event is produced by Women of Faith, a faith-based women’s organization that encourages women of all ages and stages in life to grow in faith and spiritual maturity through a relationship with Jesus Christ and an understanding of God’s love and grace. This event brings women of all denominations together in one place to laugh, praise and cry together as they listen to nationally known speakers and singers like Lisa Harper, Ken Davis, Brenda Warner, Sandi Patty, Mandisa, Amy Grant, and more. The Conference will begin with a session from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Friday, August 17, and continue throughout the day on Saturday, August 18. Cost for admission to the event is about $100 and hotel accommodations are expected to run around $200 per night (costs can be cut by sharing rooms). Anyone interested in attending this life-changing conference should please contact Dee Christian, 804-415-7796, or e-mail PTCDLC03@aol.com.
Quilters
In January 2012, the Quilters gave 11 adult quilts and 2 baby quilts to Martha for the Homeless. Last year we sent 35 adult quilts and 20 baby quilts to Lutheran World Relief (LWR), and are working on a number of quilts to send to them in the Spring. Dan Brown, Chief of LWR in Palestine, at Victoria Augustus Hospital, has told us that many of the LWR quilts are sent to orphanages. Often these quilts are the only bright spot these children have in a very gray world. The children are able to personalize their small space in this world — a bed — with a beautiful handmade colorful quilt. In June 2011 we held a fundraiser for Interfaith Adult Day Care Center of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, and raised $600.00, which Thrivent matched, increasing our donation to $1,200.00. We hope this year’s fundraiser will be as successful. In addition to quilting, we plan to make Chrismons for the LCOR Chrismon trees. We are also making plans to spruce up the Fellowship Hall, Bowling Alley, and Restrooms. If you’re interested in working with us on any of these projects, please speak with any Quilter (Marie H, Annabelle, Edna, Barbara M, Letha, Marie S, Colette) or email Colette at ccwilliam52@yahoo.com.
